2008 Grant Proposal Details
Total: $2000 Description: The math curriculum at Sheldon High School requires the use of a calculator with graphing and statistics capabilities for all math classes at or above Advanced Algebra. We also use them for discovery lessons in other math classes at all levels. These calsses average approximately 35 to 40 students who need to borrow them. Some borrow a calculator for an entire semester, and others need to borrow a calculator for just a day or two. Our goal is to build our inventory of calculators to a classroom set, in addition to several loaners, so that we can fully integrate their use with other technologies, such as the calculator-based ranger, calculator-based laboratory data collection systems, and the TI-Navigator Classroom Learning System. The TI-Navigator Classroom Learning System allows for the integration of data from a classroom set of calculators. Unfortunately, some of our current calculators inventory is out-dated or damaged from heavy use. These calculators are used every day in the higher-level math classes. Why is this important? All students deserve a complete education. The use of graphing calculator technology is a key component of that education. This project will ensure that all students have equal access to a graphing calculator during their time at Sheldon. It also will allow students in our low-level math classes to be introduced to this technology. Giving students multiple pathways to knowledge, especially through discovery and experiment, will enhance their interest and motivation. Who will be served? Students with families who cannot afford the cost of our required calculator will be served. We have witnessed a larger than normal increase in demand this year, likely a result of our struggling economy. These calculators are approximately $100 each. With a $2,000 grant we could serve twenty additional students and bring us closer to our goal of a full classroom set. As we build this set, entire classes will be given extra opportunity for engaging in the unique learning experiences offered with this technology. How will this be evaluated? We will know that the project is successful when students take advantage of our offer (which is happening already) and when we have a complete classroom set (and the TI-Navigator system). Does this build on existing programs? Yes, our textbooks, curricula, and projects all rely heavily on the use of graphing calculators. Budget: We request $2,000 to cover the cost of up to twenty TI-84 Plus graphing calculators. Proposal #: 98 |
