2008 Grant Proposal Details
Total: $1597 Description: Planned Parenthood of Southwestern Oregon (PPSO) is committed to providing youth with age-appropriate, research-based education so they are prepared to make lifelong responsible decisions about their sexual health. Teachers in Lane County schools have depended upon the highly trained education staff at Planned Parenthood for over 30 years to conduct sex education programs with elementary, middle and high school students. During the 2007-08 school year, PPSO provided 413 programs in Eugene 4J alone; 39 of those programs were for the 6th – 8th grade students at Roosevelt Middle School. We anticipate similar utilization during the current school year. Why is this important? Through a series of sessions, PPSO supports our students in gaining the knowledge and skills to postpone sexual involvement, set and respect boundaries, and protect themselves and others from engaging in risky sexual behaviors. The programs are comprehensive, aligned with Heath Education Standards, 4J curriculum guidelines and district policies. Roosevelt’s collaboration with Planned Parenthood supports our school in successfully implementing Oregon Administrative Rule 581-022-1440 that sets forth expectations for teaching human sexuality education in elementary, middle and high school. The 2008 Oregon Healthy Teens survey showed that among the Roosevelt students that have ever had sex, 50% of them did not use any protection. Clearly, our students need education and services to support their health and safety… whether they have sex now or in the future. Planned Parenthood’s expertise helps us ensure this for our students. Who will be served? A 12 week/trimester health class is required for ALL RMS students (640 pupils in 08-09). How will this be evaluated? Results from the annual Oregon Healthy Teen Survey (09) should indicate healthier behaviors. Test scores in classes demonstrate the instructional efficacy of the specific presentation. Does this build on existing programs? Please see above. Health has been required for six years. PPSO has been a part of our curriculum since it started their school presentations. However, services have been free up until now. Budget: Roosevelt Middle School requested 38 education programs during the 2007-2008 school year. The $1597 includes the following costs: Educator time for scheduling and prep, travel, and presentation; mileage reimbursement. - COST BREAKDOWN PER SESSION - EDUCATOR TIME & COST-Time/Presentation-Educator - No.(hrs)(Cost/hr.)Cost - Presentation (for Students)38-1.5-$21.46 -$1,223.22 - Presentation (for Parents)$21.46 - Preparation - $21.46 -$42.92 Round Trips27 - 0.5 $21.46 $289.71 - Total Educator Time & Cost 72.5 $1,555.85 - MILEAGE REIMBURSEMENT Travel $40.91 Total Educator & Travel Cost $1,596.76 Proposal #: 96 |
