2008 Grant Proposal Details

Ukulele Program

River Road Elementary

Sponsored by:  Grants Fund

Author:  David  Adee

Total: $2000

Description:  The project is to purchase a set of 35 ukuleles.

Why is this important?  Expands music program offering at two schools, serves a large quantity of kids, fun for music teacher and students, reading and understanding chords, lays ground work for string instrument playing of any kind.

Who will be served?  The instruments will be played by all 3/4/5 students in classroom music and in after-school performing groups at River Road and Harris/Eastside schools: about 310 students.

How will this be evaluated?  How will you evaluate the success of this project? Success of this project will be evaluated by 1) student enthusiasm 2) Students ability to sight-read chord symbols and figure out chord changes. 3) students readiness for other string instruments as reported to me by middle and high school orchestra teachers.

Does this build on existing programs?  Yes. I have been using a district set of ukuleles that were purchased with EEF money a few years ago. My students have made excellent progress with these instruments but they rotate from school to school and are only available for limited periods of time. This proposal would allow me to weave ukuleles into my music curriculum and performing ensembles throughout the year.

Budget:  35 ukuleles @ $57 each
