2008 Grant Proposal Details
Total: $500 Description: Opportunity Center is a small alternative high school which is housed separately from other schools. As a result, our students do not have access to a school library. We started one three years ago to encourage reading for pleasure. It has been a very successful program and we would like to purchase more books to supplement our library and replenish some over treasured books. Why is this important? In conjunction with purchasing our library, we started a rigorous reading program. Our students, in general are reading more successfully and a wider range of students are choosing to borrow books. Having different genres to meet the students' needs is very important. On our experience, they borrow books only to return them with rich accounts of the stories they have read. Sometimes the more beloved books aren't returned. Reading for pleasure fosters imagination, creativity and encourages healthier recreation. Who will be served? Any student can borrow these books. In the last three years, we have seen 150 constant borrowers. How will this be evaluated? We keep records of how many students borrow books. Increased numbers form year to year indicates this is a service students want to continue. We will maintain this same record keeping to determine need. Does this build on existing programs? This program will increase the size of our existing library program. Budget: The entire grant will be spent on young adult literature. Proposal #: 87 |
