2008 Grant Proposal Details
Total: $1994 Description: Project will involve building a silkscreen printing work-cubical in the art room where projects can be sensitized, cured, burned, stored, and printed. It will also budget 25% of the grant for new supporting silkscreen printing materials. The silkscreen class is taught in the art room, but sensitizing, curing, and burning is done in a shared out building. These processes need a controlled environment (dark, electricity, and controlled lighting) not available in the present art room. The constructed work-cubical will enable all silkscreen processes to be done in one place. It will also enable the athletic classes and counseling done in the portable to be uninterrupted by silkscreen printers. Why is this important? This project is important because it will expand this very popular art class, and improve guidance. The teacher cannot leave the art room for long, so students working in the portable are often unsupervised. Unsupervised students often make errors that prevent success, and require them to redo much of the process. A consolidated area will reduce error, frustration, and save wasted materials. More supervision will also increase success and enable students to explore the process more fully. Newer material and a better designed work area will also speed the printing process and improve quality of work. South Eugene High School no longer does photo silkscreen. It is important to keep this process taught in our region. Who will be served? Presently four six-week sections of silkscreen printing is offered along with two 4 hour Friday classes. Several advanced students come in during free periods or work on silkscreen projects during other art classes. With improvements, two more sections can be added and at least 4 more Friday classes. In addition, graduate, undergraduate, and staff tee shirts can be printed by students. This could be another six week class. All students are invited to art classes, but the “alternative” and “punk rock” students gravitate to the silkscreen classes. These students are of our most disenfranchised population. Classes at O.C. have 15 students, and Friday classes have slightly more. Finally, our students the most impoverished in the district. Any classes where they can create clothing, make gifts, and enhance attire without money increases pride and positive self-esteem. How will this be evaluated? Evaluation will involve monitoring registration of the newly added classes and see increased participation. Formally we can generate some artwork and produce a silkscreen with our present technology. We can also use the same artwork to produce a silkscreen using the new technology and scan for improvements. Tracking how much time the teacher is no longer out of the classroom is also valid. During the present silkscreen class approximately 20% of students do not finish their projects. We can see if that number decreases. Does this build on existing programs? This project will enhance the existing art program at our school. It will allow the art room to offer more classes, better supervised classes, and technically superior processed classes. As No Child Left Behind has extended the application of our program and required students to receive 20 additional credits to earn a diploma, reception of this grant will offer higher interest art classes for students to take. Several students have pursued careers in printing, and our school has taken students into the community to visit print shops. An expanded silkscreen printing program will increase interest, knowledge, and exposure for students interested in arts vocations.
