2008 Grant Proposal Details

Saturday School

North Eugene High-IDEAS

Sponsored by:  Grants Fund

Author:  Kay  Graham

Total: $2000

Description:  Last year the school of IDEAS used EEF funds to support Saturday School for students trying to improve grades and prepare for advanced acheivement tests. The success of that program was such that the IDEAS staff voted to continue and expand that work if possible. Beginning in the first week of November of 2008 and continuing through May of 2009, the staff of IDEAS would like to provide students with an opportunity to access two certified teachers during two hours per Saturday to boost student skill level and course passing rates. Saturday School will support students in danger of failing courses and students needing to prepare for both State and Advanced Placement tests. The School of IDEAS will welcome any student needing extra time to access technology, work with study groups, and/or tutor other students for community service hours. The Saturday School project has the full support of the parent members who serve on the IDEAS site council as well as the IDEAS staff.

Why is this important?  The staff of IDEAS has the goal of helping all IDEAS students to be college and/or work-ready by the time they graduate. Many of our students need to improve study skills and put extra effort into classes to improve passing rates. Saturday school has the impact of helping students learn that doing well in school requires extra effort. Saturday School provides students with a place to complete individual and group study under the supervsion of certified teachers. Saturday School will serve students by providing more time to complete homework with qualified instructors and a chance to see that hard work pays off in improved grades and achievement.

Who will be served?  Saturday School could potentially serve the entire student body of IDEAS (400 students) on any given Saturday. We anticipate an increase in senior participation because we have implemented a senior project that will require students to get more help from teachers. We anticipate that Saturday School will serve between 15 and 30 students per Saturday.

How will this be evaluated?  The success of the project will be evaluated by looking at course passing rates of students who attend Saturday School. The project will also be evaluated based on the number of students who utilize Saturday School for State make-up tests and Advanced Placement preparation.

Does this build on existing programs?  This project does build on existing programs. Currently IDEAS participates in a ReadRight support class to strengthen student reading and comprehension skills. IDEAS also has two support classes for struggling students. Saturday School will become one more part of the support plan for students.

Budget:  Requested Funds from EEF Grant: 4 hours of certified staffing per week for 12.5 weeks spread through the months of November - May 2009. $40.00 X 2 teachers X 2 hours X 12.4 weeks = $2000.00. In-kind Services or Other Grant Funding: 4 hours of certified staffing per week for 8.5 weeks spread through the months of November - May of 2009. $40.00 X 2 teachers X 2 hours X 8.5 weeks = $1,360. Total cost:$3,360. Total EEF Request: $2000.00. Total Saturday School Days: 21 days from November - May of 2009.
