Living Voices

Madison Middle School

Sponsored by:  Grants Fund

Author:  Rick  Gaultney

Total: $500

Description:  Imagine taking a journey to a watershed moment in time. Consider your place in history. What it was like to live in another time? Through the magic of video and an interactive performer, Living Voices presents unique and stirring presentations that capture the minds and hearts of today's audiences. Performances are all related to Civil Rights and Human Rights. Programs offered are: The Right to Dream:The fight for Civil Rights in America. Through the Eyes of a Friend: A portrait of young people in the Holocaust. Women' Suffrage/ Native Vision/ La Causa and more.

Why is this important?  It is important that students gain a deep understanding of what Civil Right and Human Rights are. It is equally important that students have a deep understanding of the history and the struggles of peoples. Living Voices creates a real experience for students that can not be duplicated in a classroom.

Who will be served?  All Madison students will attend an assembly. The goal is that we will have a presentation each year with a different Human Rights/ Civil Rights story. During a students time at Madison they will have three different experiences.

How will this be evaluated?  Students will discuss what was learned from the performances ins Block classes.

Does this build on existing programs?  Equity, understanding of other cultures and the experiences of others historically is part of our curriculum throughout 4J.
