2008 Grant Proposal Details

Cultural Experiences

Harris Elementary

Sponsored by:  Grants Fund

Author:  Wally  Bryant

Total: $2000

Description:  This program will be used to extend Harris student's cultural experiences. Funds will be used to off set cost for students to attend events that support and/or compliment the Arts, school curriculum, or cultural enrichment. This may include, but is not limited to transportation costs, event fees, or school wide presentations. A committee of Harris staff will review requests for use of funds. The staff will develop general criteria for each request. The committee will also provide opportunities open to all Harris students. Students would have the opportunity to enjoy extended cultural experiences that otherwise they may not due to cost factors and resource limitations.

Why is this important?  Although Harris has some experiences and events already scheduled, the funding for extra opportunities is limited. This program would give our students the same opportunities students has in prior yeats. Students may attend museums, art exhibits, dramas or natural cycles within nature, (Salmon Runs, Forrest and Vegetation identification). It is a program that will be able to reach our entire student body and provide a positive experience for them.

Who will be served?  The entire student body at Harris would be served. The committee would develop opportunities for all levels so the entire school may be served.

How will this be evaluated?  The success of the program will be based on surveys and feedback from students, parents and staff. As part of the criteria requests would include a provision that correlates the program experience with school curriculum of cultural awareness.

Does this build on existing programs?  Yes, we want each experience to supplement or re-enforce our school curriculum and/or the Arts and cultural enrichment. Research supports the notion that academics coupled with Art and cultural experiences increases student school success. It also shows this partnership will increase student sense of school belonging. If a students feels connected to the school, she/he will increase their chances of success.

Budget:  Transportation Costs: Per trip: $150 $150 x 4 (Primary grades and intermediate grades 2 trips at each level) Total: $600 School Wide Events: Cultural Assemblyh/Experience, Arts, Curriculum Field trip Fees Total: $1,400
