2008 Grant Proposal Details

Increasing Literacy

César E. Chávez Elementary

Sponsored by:  Cressey Family Trust

Author:  Denisa  Taylor

Total: $500

Description:  We would like to expand our collection of literature in our library for young readers to include level and age appropriate materials. Our current collection has not been updated in four years.

Why is this important?  Increasing the number of students who are at Reading Benchmark and meeting or exceeding State Reading standards is one of the goals in our School Wide Improvement Plan. Increasing the amount of reading that students are doing at home and at school is one of the strategies outlined in our action plan to meet this goal. As part of this goal, it is important to our staff to also promote a love of reading while increasing literacy. In order to do this, we believe it is important to have a variety of interesting and appropriate books available. Many of our students do not have access to books at home, do not have the resources to purchase books and do not have a family member who can take them to the public library.

Who will be served?  The grant will serve all students in K-5th grades (especially the 3rd, 4th and 5th graders). This is approximately 170 children.

How will this be evaluated?  Students will be very excited to have a new literature collection in our library. We will be able to evaluate the success of this project by monitoring student check-out.

Does this build on existing programs?  The literature purchased with this grant will be included in our library. Our goal is to continue to add new, interesting and motivating books for our students.
