2008 Grant Proposal Details

Field Trips

César E. Chávez Elementary

Sponsored by:  Grants Fund

Author:  Denisa  Taylor

Total: $2000

Description:  Funding for buses for field trips that will enhance and broaden our students' educational experiences. Students will be allowed opportunities to visit museums and art exhibits; hike mountain trails and the community wetlands; explore pumpkin patches and local farms; and observe fish hatcheries and recycling plants.

Why is this important?  Field trips are extremely important to the learning that occurs at our school. Students are provided opportunites to extend the instructional lessons that are taught by our talented teachers. We are a Title 1 school with over 75% of our students living in poverty. Many of our students do not have access to the experiences provided through field trips. Trips to the pumpkin patch, Mt. Pisgah, the Oregon Coast Aquarium, the Hult Center, the Shedd Institute and the Maude Kerns Art Center are for many a new adventure.

Who will be served?  All 419 students in Kindergarten through grade 5 attending César E. Chávez Elementary will benefit.

How will this be evaluated?  Teachers will have classroom discussions that will integrate the content area to the experiences provided through the field trips. Our students will respond through journal writing, oral presentations, and technology enhanced Keynote projects. Annual staff, family and student surveys will include evaluative statements regarding field trips.

Does this build on existing programs?  Field trips are planned to support the learning that occurs in the classroom. An annual 3rd grade field trip to the Oregon Coast supports a science unit of study, Sea Life. Students in the 4th and 5th grade classrooms study the life cycle of salmon. The field trip to the river to release the salmon is very meaningful and supports the curriculum. Every year our 2nd grade students study nature and our environment. Their field trips to Nearby Nature and Mt. Pisgah allow students to experience the world in which they live. This is just a few of the field trips we provide for our students.

Budget:  Total amount: $ 2,000 Transportation Considerations: $20 per hour for first 4 hours, $28.50 per hour after first 4 hours, $.40 per mile, $5.00 reservation fee. César E. Chávez Elementary has 17 classrooms. Each classroom will be allowed 1 four hour field trip.
