2008 Grant Proposal Details

Author Visit, Curt Nelson

Bertha Holt Elementary

Sponsored by:  Cressey Family Trust

Author:  Ron  Ewert

Total: $500

Description:  Author Visit, Curt Nelson (www.slightlyillusional.com). This program is an upbeat, funny and motivating experience designed to inspire kids to find books that interest them and READ.

Why is this important?  Many kids check a book out from the school library, let it kick around in their backpack for a few days and then return it, unread. Curt Nelson is a school science teacher that uses comedy, role-playing, and science experimentation to create a "buzz" with the kids about reading.

Who will be served?  The whole school would be served (532 students)

How will this be evaluated?  The two school librarians report that the performance "Go Wild" last year was "wildly" successful and entertaining. Kids jumped on the "reading train" at a much higher rate following this program. We expect similar results if we do another program this year. We are considering the "Saddle Up 'N' Read!" program this year in honor of Oregon's 150th birthday.

Does this build on existing programs?  Yes, We have two full time librarians who read to the younger children daily and work hard with all children to help each one, at every reading level, find books that are appropriate and rewarding. This is just another way to make reading more exciting for the kids.

Budget:  Curt Nelson charges $850 for a full day visit, which would involve all of Holt's students at different times. He does not charge for transportation. The parent group would pay the remaining $350 needed for this program.
