2008 Grant Proposal Details
Total: $500 Description: The Homework Club at the Silver Lea Building Site runs Tuesday and Thursday for the entire school year. It is available to all students at Yujin Gakuen and Corridor Elementary. Students are referred to homework club by their teachers, their parents or by themselves. Homework club provides assistance to students whom for various reasons cannot finish their homework at home. Jeanne Mandrapa, Homework Club Director, is able to assist the Yujin Gakuen students with their Japanese homework as well as their English homework. She provides a quiet environment in our cafeteria. She expects the students to be responsible, respectful and safe. Why is this important? With our compressed curriculum at Yujin Gakuen, all grades depend on students doing some of their review work as homework. Most families at Yujin Gakuen are not able to help at home with the Japanese homework. Currently, families pay monthly so their child may attend Homework Club. They receive one-to-one help and caring assistance. Homework completion can make the difference between school success and school failure. Students can keep up with their peers and are prepared for the next school day if they complete their homework regularly. We offer this program for our students so “No Child is Left Behind” in our quest to offer a rigorous program for our students. Who will be served? Students from all grade levels are eligible for homework club from Yujin Gakuen and Corridor School. Up to forty-five students are served monthly How will this be evaluated? The success of the project will be judged by evaluating student success in class and on statewide assessments as well as teacher and parent perceptions of program effectiveness. Does this build on existing programs? This program has been operational for nine years. It would be wonderful to get new students involved who have not been able to afford the $30.00 monthly fee. Budget: We are requesting $500. The total budget will be used to pay for sixteen monthly scholarships during the school year for students who need academic assistance in homework completion and meet the free and reduced lunch federal guidelines Proposal #: 116 |
